HYGIENE ITEMS NEEDED

We are in need of small, travel-sized hygiene items for the baskets that are available to our breakfast visitors.  We especially need soap, deodorant, hair shampoo and combs.  The next time you are in your favorite store, please stop by the section with travel-sized items of these types and purchase some for our baskets.

          Free Neighborhood Breakfasts

Free neighborhood breakfasts are served in the multi-purpose room each Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m.  You may donate to this ministry of the church by designating your gift for the "Breakfast Fund."  A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board if you would like to donate food items, cook, and/or serve a meal for this breakfast.

THE 6:35 INITIATIVE

What in the world is this?  Check out Luke 6:35-36.  Thanks to all of you and your tremendous support of the SSJ project, the 6:35 Initiative has evolved.

St. Lucas has made such a dramatic and marvelous step in pursuing the goal of giving without expecting anything in return.  The SSJ group was fortunate to be able to present ideas to the congregation and to the Church Council, found that their ideas were supported by the majority, and that their work was appreciated and encouraged.  Out of this the 6:35 Initiative has come to life!  This group of individuals will strive to keep our vision and mission on the forefront of all that is going on at St. Lucas.

Please know that we encourage dialogue among everyone.  However, only by hearing from individuals themselves, can ideas be developed.  If you have an idea about how St. Lucas can continue on its mission path, please bring it to the council or to the 6:35 Initiative.

We are proud of the individuals who have made a commitment to this group and would love to have more mission oriented individuals join us at our next gathering on August 11th at 5:30 p.m. at Randy and Shannon Dierlam's house.

FINAL REPORT
SPIRITUAL STRATEGIC JOURNEY
June 14, 2009

Whew!! We are certainly busy! The Spiritual Strategic Journey has enlivened and enlarged some existing ministries of the church, and it has also launched new initiatives. A quick review of our report shows that the spiritual strategic journey is responsible for no less than 7 tangible outcomes. As the future unfolds, these will be fleshed out and even more added. They are as follows:

  1.  Enhancement of Lucas Place Ministries
  2. Creation of visitation ministry
  3. Enlargement of our Free Breakfast Program
  4. Creation of an environment (building and grounds) that reflects our new mission
  5. Enhancement of Worship Opportunities
  6. Music Education Ministry
  7. Development of partnerships within our community

These seven outcomes share two common themes, and we hope you will remember them as a good summary of what we have gone through in our planning process.

First, we are definitely committed to remaining in Jacobsville. It seems that God closed the door on our considerations of moving and/or merging. We have felt the Spirit of God telling us to stay at our current address.

A second common theme to these outcomes is what we call our core value. We have come to see that we are called to unselfish service. Our attitude toward what it means to be the church has undergone a radical revision. Common to all our mission initiatives is the message we discerned as our triplets studied the original words of Jesus. The thrust of his ministry was outrageous generosity. Giving without any expectation of reward or profit. Jacobsville doesn't exist for our benefit?to increase our income or membership; no, we exist for the benefit of Jacobsville.

We have said ?no' to the worries of the past 50 years. We pledge not to concentrate on money, members, or other administrative and management issues. Instead we will focus on serving, for as Jesus said, we are here to serve, not to be served. Or, as we might paraphrase, God wants the church to be a social commitment, not a social club.

We are grateful for the SSJ Team who committed themselves to one year of meeting together and attending the three weekend seminars with George Bullard. We are also grateful to the many members of St. Lucas that participated in the Share and Prayer Triplets. As you know, the suggestions that became part of our future story came from you, as you met with the SSJ Team on two occasions to express your dreams for the future direction of our church.

So . . . because of you, it is working. Thanks be to God!!
